Artist Bio or Statement / Bio de l’artiste ou la déclaration
UK artist Mike Sibley aims to emphasise character, tell a story, display the intricacies of the subject’s creation, and to suggest reality while maintaining a hand-drawn appearance.
A professional graphite artist for over thirty years, Mike often spends over two hundred hours on a single drawing using only graphite pencils – he believes colour gets in the way of presenting true texture and form.
Mike’s drawings can be found as far afield as Australia to South Africa, and Europe to the USA. From 1980 he drew over 50 open edition head-studies that many believe to be the definitive canine collection, and his publisher was selling over 20,000 prints a year. In 1990, Mike switched to self-publishing limited edition prints featuring dogs in their environments and his first print, featuring Irish Water Spaniels, sold out in less than four hours.
In 2000 Mike created SibleyFineArt.com and, to help less-experienced artists, began writing online tutorials and launched Starving-Artists.net. The tutorials grew into his 288-page book “Drawing from Line to Life”, which many artists consider to be their bible. Mike, in partnership with JD Hillberry, now hosts TheDrawingForum.com and passes on his knowledge through online courses at Drawspace.com and running international 3-day workshops.
